Kiamaiko is known by many to host many refugees from Ethiopia and Somali both registered and unregistered. On the other hand a day will not end without seeing Lorries flocking in from different parts of the country carrying goats and sheep that are to be slaughtered. Kiamaiko is said to be the biggest goat/sheep meat supplier in Nairobi County. Child labour is evident as most people working in those slaughter houses are young boy

Kiamaiko- how did the name came about? There was a man called Michael who lived in the village he owned bigger part of the village and when people were asked where they were or where they were going? Their response would be in Swahili “nimetoka Kwa Michael”or ‘niko kwa michael (am from Michael’s place) and so the name stuck and it was joined to be Kia-maiko.
Since the year began gunshots have been heard, in the evening, late at night and early in the morning. Young boys have been the victims of such deaths within mathare. The most surprising thing is any time they are gunned down they are found with guns or knives. The big question is, where do they get the guns? And don’t they have anybody to tell them what they are doing is wrong? What kind of society are we living in, where we lose young people through gun shots?
At Huruma police station the security personnel have tried so much to ensure that law and order is maintained, very different from other areas where other residents are crying of police harassment. Personally I think something should be done to save the lives of the young boys dying. A Day ago 4 young boys below the age of 15 were gunned downed after being tracked by police for so long. The community carried their anger to the road where they blocked the road from Huruma corner to Kariobangi outer ring road by lighting big tyres causing traffic stating that they were very young the police ought to have taken then to a rehabilitation center.
