MATHARE HEROES AWARDS 2015

December 29, 2015

The name Mathare creates a lot of shivers in people’s mind. To some people, it is a place known to be associated with so many vices but that’s not the case as it is. Mathare Slum has got so many great talents and people who are willing to transform the community and it’s environs in a positive way. On 12th Dec 2015 is a day that many Mathareans will live to remember for they were appreciated in different categories including Entertainment, Entrepreneurs, Charity work, Outstanding Organizations, Peace Ambassadors. Etc…. The voting number was 22348. And SMS was free of charge.
The reason behind the Mathare Heroes awards was to recognize and honor the efforts of those individuals/groups that  have been doing something positive on the ground but haven’t been recognized. Wairimu Gitau and Kevin Otieno were the masters of ceremony representing the real faces of Mathare.
“I am the founder of Mathare Heroes Awards. We’ve been working as a team with Mathare Students who are in different universities. It is a network which sat and did nominations up to where the community participated in voting. This project has lingered in my mind for a long time. I also shared the idea with my brother David Waithaka who was born and brought up in Mathare.
I’ve been praying and today am so happy. I’ve been walking around Mathare and a good example is “Baba Milly”. I have seen the good work he’s been doing in the community. I once witnessed him take someone to Mbagathi hospital and I wondered how we can appreciate such people so they can feel honored. Today the dream has come true. My future is to open the Mathare circle because the circle is too small. Youth groups need to get connections on how they can get tenders. Ambassadors need to connect with other ambassadors. Entrepreneurs also need to connect with other entrepreneurs and start investing.
You can now agree with me that the stories that you’ve been hearing on media about Mathare is not what you are seeing here today. Mathare is a peaceful slum”. Said, Billian Okoth Ojiwa
